Right and Wrong - Pleasure rewards one side and we can choose to ignore it
Are right and wrong taught, or born? Are some minds more prone to breaking the rules, and some sworn to uphold them.
I ponder... in the Animal Kingdom, do some animals steal and cheat, and others not? More interestingly, does this occur with entire species, or breeds, or in general? Do some birds steal nest supplies, and others find their own?
In other words, is crime of only a certain percentage of any species the norm, or a rare thing we see only in humans. Does the animal world know the difference between right and wrong?
As far as I know, in our history, stealing has always existed. Taking things that we didn't make or earn has always been the way of the poor, or in many cases, just the way of life for people that don't want to work for themselves. Some people work hard, and others exploit the work, and reap the rewards without labour or guilt.
I just don't have the knowledge as to whether this is natural to other animals. Animals that don't have church, or schools, and parents to teach us stealing the shiny object isn't right. They see something they need, and they take it. Some animals will even fight you for it, or harm you to get the object. Others won't.
Stealing isn't what we're supposed to do. However, without anybody to "catch us" or make us feel bad, the logic of stealing is hard to ignore. Why hunt, when somebody else will hunt, and I can steal.
When I think about this deeper, I run into more deeper concepts and theories. I see society thrives in a puzzle of good and evil, and we always have a choice. We choose to be evil, or we choose to be good. Ignoring theft as the example, this choice is rooted in a basic yes/no option to absolutely every choice. We can always choose yes or no to anything. Is that choice learned or born?
A concept of instinct vs environment. I believe there are times, when we all experience the phycological version of the little cartoon angel and devil over our shoulders. Feelings inside feel right one way, and society enforces the other. Instinct vs training. I won't admit to hearing voices, but my mind will often play out difference scenarios before making a choice. Good vs bad. What we may want to do vs what we think we should do.
I wonder what is born into our DNA and what we learn via society and upbringing. What is man made vs what may be God made, or science if you prefer. How we choose the answer to every life choice is either to ignore the inner self, or the devil over our shoulder and go with the angel. Reward vs the icky feeling when you know you're doing the wrong thing. Anit-pleasure I'll call it.
Pleasure vs anti-pleasure.
This may even be the science that makes our body show we're telling lies. You can measure it on a paper.
On a scale of 1 to 10, orgasm to vomit.
Ok... that was a bit much.
Since day 1, science has set facts and rules that get broken. As we learn more, sometimes somebody says; whoops... I guess we were way off on that one. The world isn't flat.
And has the arrogance to think it won't happen again.
